7 challenges smart people choose to overcome

7 challenges smart people choose to overcome7 challenges smart people choose to overcomeIts truly fascinating how smart, successful people approach problems. Where others see impenetrable barriers, they see challenges to embrace and obstacles to overcome.Their confidence in the face of hardship is driven by the ability to let go of the negativity that holds so many otherwise sensible people back.Martin Seligman at the University of Pennsylvania has studied this phenomenon more than anyone else has, and hes found that success in life is driven by one critical distinction- whether you believe that your failures are produced by personal deficits beyond your control or that they are mistakes you can fix with effort.Success isnt the only thing determined by your mindset. Seligman has found much higher rates of depression in people who attribute their failures to personal deficits. Optimists fare better they treat failure as learning experiences and believe they can do better in the future .This success mindset requires emotional intelligence (EQ), and its no wonder that, among the million-plus people that TalentSmart has tested, 90% of top performers have high EQs.Maintaining the success mindset isnt easy. There are seven things, in particular, that tend to shatter it. These challenges drag people down because they appear to be barriers that cannot be overcome. Not so for smart people, as these challenges never hold them back.AgeAge really is just a number. Smart people dont let their age define who they are and what they are capable of. Just ask Betty White or any young, thriving entrepreneur. I remember a professor in graduate school who told our class that we were all too young and inexperienced to do consulting work. He said we had to go work for another company for several years before we could hope to succeed as independent consultants. I was the youngest person in the class, and I sat there doing work for my consulting clients while he droned on. Without fail, people feel compelled to tell you what you should and shouldnt do because of your age. Dont listen to them. Smart people certainly dont. They follow their heart and allow their passion - not the body theyre living in - to be their guide. They follow their heart and allow their passion - not the body theyre living in - to be their guide.NegativityLife wont always go the way you want it to, but when it comes down to it, you have the saatkorn 24 hours in the day as everyone else does. Smart people make their time count. Instead of complaining about how things could have been or should have been, they reflect on everything they have to be grateful for. Then they find the best solution available, tackle the problem, and move on.When the negativity comes from someone else, smart people avoid it by setting limits and distancing themselves from it. Think of it this wayIf the complainer were smoking, would you sit there all afternoon inhaling the second-hand smoke?Of course not. Youd dis tance yourself, and you should do the same with all negative people.A great way to stop complainers in their tracks is to ask them how they intend to fix the problem theyre complaining about. They will either quiet down or redirect the conversation in a productive direction.Toxic peopleSmart people believe in a simple notion you are the average of the five people you spend the most time with. Just think about it - some of the most successful companies in recent history were founded by brilliant pairs. Steve Jobs and Steve Wozniak of Apple lived in the same neighborhood, Bill Gates and Paul Allen of Microsoft met in prep school, and Sergey Brin and Larry Page of Google met at Stanford.Just as great people help you to reach your full potential, toxic people drag you right down with them. Whether its negativity, cruelty, the victim syndrome, or just plain craziness, toxic people create stress and strife that should be avoided at all costs. If youre unhappy with where you are in your li fe, just take a look around. More often than not, the people youve surrounded yourself with are the root of your problems.Youll never reach your peak until you surround yourself with the right people. What other people thinkWhen your sense of pleasure and satisfaction are derived from comparing yourself to others, you are no longer the master of your own destiny. While its impossible to turn off your reactions to what others think of you, you dont have to hold up your accomplishments to anyone elses, and you can always take peoples opinions with a grain of salt. That way, no matter what other people are thinking or doing, your self-worth comes from within.Smart people know that caring about what other people think is a waste of time and energy. When smart people feel good about something that theyve done, they dont let anyones opinions take that away from them.No matter what other people think of you at any particular moment, one thing is certain - youre never as good or bad as they say you are.FearFear is nothing more than a lingering emotion thats fueled by your imagination. Danger is real. Its the uncomfortable rush of adrenaline you get when you almost step in front of a bus. Fear is a choice. Smart people know this better than anyone does, so they flip fear on its head. They are addicted to the euphoric feeling they get from conquering their fears.Dont ever hold back in life just because you feel scared. I often hear people say, Whats the worst thing that can happen to you? Will it kill you? Yet, death isnt the worst thing that can happen to you The worst thing that can happen to you is allowing yourself to die inside while youre still alive. The past or the futureLike fear, the past and the future are products of your mind. No amount of guilt can change the past, and no amount of anxiety can change the future. Smart people know this, and they focus on living in the present moment. Its impossible to reach your full potential if youre constantly somewhere e lse, unable to fully embrace the reality (good or bad) of this very moment. To live in the moment, you must do two things1) Accept your past. If you dont make peace with your past, it will never leave you and it will create your future. Smart people know the only good time to look at the past is to see how far youve come.2) Accept the uncertainty of the future, and dont place unnecessary expectations upon yourself. Worry has no place in the here and now. As Mark Twain once said,Worrying is like paying a debt you dont owe.The state of the worldKeep your eyes on the news for any length of time and youll see its just one endless cycle of war, violent attacks, fragile economies, failing companies, and environmental disasters. Its easy to think the world is headed downhill fast. And who knows? Maybe it is. But smart people dont worry about that because they dont get caught up in things they cant control. Instead, they focus their energy on directing the two things that are completely withi n their power - their attention and their effort. They focus their attention on all the things theyre grateful for, and they look for the good thats happening in the world. They focus their effort on doing what they can every single day to improve their own lives and the world around them, because these small steps are all it takes to make the world a better place. They focus their effort on doing what they can every single day to improve their own lives and the world around them Bringing it all togetherYour success is driven by your mindset. With discipline and focus, you can ensure that these seven obstacles never hold you back from reaching your full potential. What other challenges do smart people overcome? What to Do When You Have Been Fired

What to Do When You Have Been FiredWhat to Do When You Have Been FiredSteve Jobs. J.K. Rowling. Walt Disney. Oprah. What do all these famous people have in common? Theyve all been fired. If youre currently staring at your own pink slip- or anticipating one in the near future- you can take a tiny bit of comfort in knowing that youre in illustrious company. To set yourself up for a second act thats as impressive as theirs, you need to do a little preparation. That means taking a deep breath, getting yourself together, and looking at your situation. If youre like most people, you have a lot of questions. Are you eligible for unemployment? Can you appeal? What happens if you have been wrongfully discharged? What do you say in your cover letters and job interviews?Heres what you need to know about your employee rights, your financial options, and your best path forward when you are fired or otherwise terminated from employment. 01Termination Checklist Do This Right NowWhen youve lost your job, its important to check- right away- on compensation due, benefits, references, and unemployment. If you have been fired and havent been informed about benefits, contact the Human Resources department at your former employer or your manager to request information on the position of your benefits. Follow this checklist to make sure you have covered all the bases.02What to Do in the Days After Youve Been FiredThe day you get fired, your focus will waver between the immediate (I just got fired. What do I do now?) and the very long-term (Is my career over?). To keep from getting lost in the details or psyching yourself out, it helps to have a plan. This step-by-step list tells you what you need to know when you have been fired from your job- and what to focus on today, tomorrow, and so on.03Things Not to Say (or Do) If Youre FiredWeve all seen it in movies the hero gets fired from his job, makes a big scene that either embarrasses his evil boss or sets the hero up for eventual redemp tion and then stomps out of the office, accompanied by stirring music. That makes for great drama, but if you try to replicate it in real life, youll notice that its a lot less satisfying without the soundtrack and flattering lights.Bottom line, theres a right way to behave after getting fired- and a lot of stuff you shouldnt say or do, lest you make a schwimmbad situation worse. Avoid these common mistakes.04Does My Employer Have to Provide Notice of Termination?Short answer probably not. When an employee is terminated or laid-off, there are no federal regulations requiring employers to give advance notice to the employee unless the employee is covered by an individual contract with their employer, a union/collective bargaining agreement, or the WARN Act. If youre like the majority of workers, these probably dont apply to you- in which case, your employer is free to terminate you on the spot.05Were You Fired for Cause? When an employee is terminated for cause, they are fired from th eir job for a specific reason, for example, being chronically late, stealing, spending too much on social media, or having a bad attitude. Its important to figure out whether you were fired for cause- as opposed to being laid off- because it may determine whether youre eligible for unemployment. Heres how to handle being terminated for cause.06Can You Collect Unemployment?Dont assume that being fired means that youre ineligible for unemployment. Depending on the circumstances, you could still qualify. The exception is if you were fired for misconduct, but you can always apply because your perception of your work history may be different than your employers.07What Is Wrongful Termination?Wrongful termination happens when an employee is discharged from employment for illegal reasons or if company policy is violated when the employee is fired. If you were wrongly terminated, you ?may be able to appeal the decision. Heres how to tell if you were wrongfully terminated- and what you can d o about it.08Employee RightsRegardless of how you were terminated, its important to know your rights. Depending on which state you live in, whether youre working under a contract, or as an at-will employee, and how the employer typically handles terminations, your rights will vary.09How to Answer the Interview Question, Why Were You Fired?Getting fired isnt the end of the world, even if it feels like it on the day you receive your termination. Handled correctly, it can be a minor bump in the road of your career. Heres how to handle the inevitable job interview questions about your termination honestly and positively, so that you can move on to your next adventure.10Job Termination Questions and AnswersHere areanswers to the most frequently asked questions about termination from employment, including reasons for getting fired, employee rights when you have been terminated, collecting unemployment, wrongful termination, saying goodbye to co-workers and more.

What is the stress vaccine and could we have one soon

What is the stress vaccine and could we have one soonWhat is the stress vaccine and could we have one soonCould there be a vaccine for stress one day? Recently, researchers at the University of Colorado Boulder published some promising findings in the jurnalPsychopharmacology.Christopher Lowry, the studys senior author, is an award-winning Integrative Physiology Professor. Inspired by previously conducted research that posits that a modern-sterile society has caused us to lose contact with important germs and bacteria integral to healthy immune systems, Lowry and his team successfully identified a bacterium that helps block symptoms of anxiety, particularly the fatty 10(Z)-hexadecenoic acid, was discovered to assist immune cells in precluding certain pathways that cause inflammation. Follow Ladders on FlipboardFollow Ladders magazines on Flipboard covering Happiness, Productivity, Job Satisfaction, Neuroscience, and moraThe hygiene hypothesisThis exciting discovery was actually pione ered nearly 30 years ago, by an English scientist by the name of David Strachan. Strachans particular findings were more specific to the lack of exposure of microorganisms crucial to young, developing children. The doctor believes the absence of these organisms have to lead to increased cases of allergies and asthma, thus introducing a term that has since come into common usage, the hygiene hypothesis. The U.S Food and Drug Administration reports the followingAccording to the hygiene hypothesis, the problem with extremely clean environments is that they fail to provide the necessary exposure to germs required to educate the immune system so it can learn to launch its defense responses to infectious organisms. The correlation between a healthy body and the role of bacteria is nothing resembling a novel concept the correlation between a healthy mind and bacteria specifically has been previously researched as well. Bugs as drugs is a popular coinage for the research. As reported by Ladder s, The Journal Nature Microbiology identified two bacterial genera, Coprococcus and Dialister, both bacterial genera that are consistently absent in sufferers of depression. In our population-level study, we identified several groups of bacteria that co-varied with human depression and quality of life across populations, said Professor Raes, who was the studys lead researcher.A few months later Lowry and his team have unveiled similar finds, although this latest study wasnt Lowrys first foray into the world of healthy bacteria. Previously, Lowry uncovered a soil based bacterium that acted like an antidepressant of sorts when administered to rodents. The results seemed to survive on its anti-inflammatory properties. The stress vaccineThe newest study set its crosshair on specific fatty acids. When fatty acid 10 (Z) gets into cells, it blocks pathways that result in inflammation. Lowry hopes further research will lead to what he called a stress vaccine. An agent that can be given to fir st responders, soldiers, or anyone that has reason to anticipate a high-stress situation. The fatty acid is derived from the soil residing bacteriumMycobacterium vaccae. The idea is that as humans have moved away from farms and an agricultural or hunter-gatherer existence into cities, we have lost contact with organisms that served to regulate our immune system and suppress inappropriate inflammation, Lowry explained. That has put us at higher risk for inflammatory disease and stress-related psychiatric disorders. The for now titled Stress Vaccine might belie the end of the road, but theres a lot more to be uncovered here. The soil is rich with bacteria ready to offer a plethora of boosts to both mental and somatic health. Lowry continues, This is just one strain of one species of one type of bacterium that is found in the soil but there are millions of other strains in soils. We are just beginning to see the tip of the iceberg in terms of identifying the mechanisms through which they have evolved to keep us healthy. It should inspire awe in all of us.

An examination of a group of healthy young males intimates that those that subscribe to the Keto diet can potentially damage blood cells by permitting cheat days.Since impaired traubenzucker tolerance and spikes in blood sugar levels are known to be associated with an increased risk in cardiovascular disease, it made sense to look at what was happening in the blood vessels after a sugar hit, explains the studys first author, Cody Durrer.Follow Ladders on FlipboardFollow Ladders magazines on Flipboard covering Happiness, Productivity, Job Satisfaction, Neuroscience, and moreThe Keto diet has become particularly popular amongst schriftart 2 Diabetes patients wishing to mitigat e blood control in the short term. 5 tips to nail your LinkedIn profile like a boss

5 tips to nail your LinkedIn profile like a boss5 tips to nail your LinkedIn profile like a bossLinkedInhas been around for a loooong time - since 2002, that is.Facebookwelches still a mere fantasy of Harvard underclassman Mark Zuckerberg, and the first iPhone wouldnt be released for another five years, indicating just how far offInstagramandSnapchatwere. But in the years since the releases of the latter three social media sites, they have displaced LinkedIn in setting the precedent for how we act online, which is typically very casually, lightheartedly, and sometimes even intimately. But because LinkedIn serves such a different purpose than its mora social social media counterparts, it comes with its own, potentially unfamiliar set of rules.Anna Wood, a career and lifestyle consultant and female empoweress who foundedBrains Over Blonde, gave us the lowdown on how to best present yourself on LinkedIn.1. Dont accept everyone who adds youTheres a common notion that you must accept ever yone who adds you on LinkedIn in order to expand your network. Wood, who doesnt accept just anyone on her personal account, disagrees, maintaining the same mentality that most people have for Facebook friends. I like to keep my feed clean to the people I know and care about following, she tells us. Plus, you dont know what others reputations are, and your connections are visible to everyone.2. Respond to most recruitersRecruiters and headhunters might reach out to you on the social media site occasionally, especially if youve selected the Let recruiters know youre open option. But this doesnt mean you need to extensively engage with everyone who slides into your DMs. If youre not interested, say so, suggests Wood. Theyll appreciate the response. If youre not particularly intrigued by the offer but youd still like to respond, Wood says this is a prime opportunity to make your interests mora explicitly known. Its also a chance to let them know what youareinterested in or to start a re lationship for when you may be looking in the future.3. Post updates regularlySimilar to Facebooks status updates, LinkedIn offers a less-used article option that allows users to post text, images, and videos. This isnt necessarily the place to dish about the latest celeb gossip (leave that for your FB friends), but Woods is an advocate of the article feature, if used appropriately. Publishing articles on LinkedIn is a great way to gain credibility in your field as a thought leader and build your personal brand.4. Get a professional profile picture takenA crop job simply wont cut it on LinkedIn, Wood cautions, especially if said photo was taken in a social rather than a professional setting. Wood recommends the siteSnapprfor an affordable photoshoot - or even just asking a pal with a nice point-and-shoot to snap some pictures of you in front of a white wall or at your desk. Its so easy and makes a huge diff, she encourages.5. Use searchable terms in your headlineA common mistake mo st LinkedIn rookies make, according to Wood, is listing your official job title and your job title alone in the headline section. Your LinkedIn headline should include searchable terms you want to show up for, Wood explains. Think entrepreneur, thought leader, innovator, social media expert. Your company and position show up to the right of the headline, so including an innovative headline will set you apartandavoid redundancy. This article first appeared on Brit + Co.

Answer Interview Questions About Employment Gaps Answer Interview Questions About Employment Gaps Many workers applying for jobs today have a gap in their employment history. While this isnt an automatic downgrade to your job prospects, you should be ready to address the issue during your interview because its likely to be one of the first questions your interviewer is going to ask you. It will be easier if you take a few steps in advance to position yourself for returning to work after a career break. You may have already addressed the gap in your resume or cover letter. If you have, use what you stated as a starting point for a discussion. If not, take the time to frame a response before you go to an interview.  That way you wont be caught off-guard without a response. Employment Gaps Interviewers will usually be interested in learning about when, why, and how you left your previous positions, along with  any resulting periods of  time on your resume not covered by paid employment.  They will be curious  about your motivations for leaving if you left voluntarily and spent time  outside the workforce, and may also want to know more about your situation if you were fired or asked to leave. Examples of Best Answers Of course, the best way to answer wont be the same for everyone. Your approach to these questions depends on many factors, such as how you spent the time off, your level of success in the jobs  you left, and your track record after the gap or gaps, for example. Here are a few angles  to consider when discussing gaps in employment: If you can, emphasize anything constructive which you did during your time off,  particularly elements that reflect positively on your character or are related to the position youre applying for. Responses like I took time  off to complete my MBA, I prepared for and passed the test for my  Certified Financial Planner designation, or I focused on my volunteer work  and started a new mentoring program for inner-city youth are examples of  answers that emphasize positive aspects of your time off.  Relate any skills or knowledge that you cultivated during your time off. Some candidates wont have such a clear-cut a story to tell.  Maybe you just  took time off for personal reasons such as dealing with a personal or family  issue.  If you addressed a problem and resolved the issue, then you might want to share that story with your interviewer.  For example, you might  mention that you took time off to rehabilitate from an injury or help care for an elderly parent.  The key will be to describe the issue as a past problem that  will no longer interfere with productivity.   If you took time off to do something fun like spending the winter skiing,  traveling through Europe, or mastering golf, then its important to demonstrate that you had a solid work ethic before and after your hiatus.  For example, you should provide  examples of how hard you worked on key projects before and after your break. Offering recommendations from  supervisors who can attest to long  hours worked, high energy, and optimal investment in the job is a good way to back up your answer. In a case where you were laid off from a job resulting in a period of  unemployment, share the reasons why there was a reduction in the workforce and  reference any indicators that you were in good standing at the time. If you spent the gap volunteering, developing a new skill to increase your relevancy in the workforce, working pro bono, or using your time in some other productive way, be sure to include it in your answer. If the gaps in your resume are a product of termination, you need to prove to your employer that the reasons why you were fired are no longer an impact on your overall performance. If there were reasons unrelated to your current target job, you could mention those.  For example, I was working as  a principal at the time and had difficulty managing the budget effectively.  I decided to return to my first love, teaching, where I had previously  excelled, and you can see that my teaching reviews have been very positive  since that time. You can also spend a bit of time explaining what you learned from the incident and any changes you have made in your attitude or your work ethic. In all instances where you need to account for a gap, you should share as  much concrete evidence of your success in the jobs prior to the gap and  after you resumed employment.  Itemize your accomplishments by referring to  situations where you intervened, specific actions you took, and the results  you generated.  Emphasize how your company benefited from your role. If  possible, secure recommendations from supervisors to support the explanation you plan to give during the interview.

4 compelling reasons you need to be more self-aware

4 compelling reasons you need to be more self-aware 4 compelling reasons you need to be more self-aware In the FBI Academy, we trained how to run down and tackle individuals who resisted arrest. I was a lousy runner and came up at the rear of every race. The idea that I could run down or even catch up with a suspect produced snarky comments and rolled eyes from my classmates. My ego took a big hit, but I also knew my competence as an FBI agent must be grounded in reality. I needed to be self-aware so I could make an honest assessment of my skills and strengths. Only at that point could I plan for ways to grow my strengths so I could manage my weaknesses.Follow Ladders on Flipboard!Follow Ladders’ magazines on Flipboard covering Happiness, Productivity, Job Satisfaction, Neuroscience, and more! How important is self-awareness? A  study by Green Peak Partners and Cornell University  examined the performance of 72 executives from a variety of companies. It found that “a high self-awareness score was the strongest predictor of overall success.”As entrepreneurs, business owners and lead ers, self-awareness is essential to your success. It’s stupid to pretend that you don’t have flaws or weaknesses. Instead, be smart and get ahead of them so they don’t sabotage you when you’re confronted with a stressful situation. Here are four compelling reasons you need to be more self-aware:1. Understand how you come across to othersThe way we perceive ourselves is distorted, but most of us are not self-aware enough to recognize it! If we don’t want to be known as stingy, arrogant or self-righteous, we don’t look for those qualities in ourselves. Of course, we readily identify those qualities in other people! If we want to be perceived as competent, polite and generous, guess what? Those are the qualities we find in ourselves. There is enough ego in all of us to produce a flattering self-image that might not be congruent with how others see us. The way we see ourselves is often an illusion, and it can be a dangerous one if we misjudge how we come across to our colleagu es and supervisors.Conversely, if you suffer from a lack of self-esteem, you could be undermining your position and chances for advancement as you navigate the quagmire of office politics. How to make it work for you: Be mentally tough enough to keep your ego in check. Ask trusted friends or colleagues to give an honest evaluation of how you come across to others in a variety of situations. Don’t take the easy route and ask for feedback on your best behavior. Let the good, the bad and the ugly hang out, and be brave enough to push for honest answers.2. Become aware of your deepest needsSince we all possess a somewhat muddled and inaccurate image of how we come across to others, it shouldn’t be a shock to learn that we tend to justify our motives through rose-colored glasses as well. In fact, psychologists believe it’s important that our brain sees a clear connection between our thoughts, emotions and behavior. This strong connection leads to good mental health. However, thinkin g or feeling one way and then behaving in a different manner causes cognitive dissonance, and we experience anxiety and stress as we try to justify the behavior.Behavioral science has proven that human beings are motivated by several needs. At a basic level is the biological drive to eat, drink and sleep. Another motivator is reward and punishment, such as when we work for a salary and are rewarded with a paycheck. It is the third motivator that requires self-awareness - the things we pursue because they bring us joy and contentment.  Shelley E. Taylor, UCLA psychology professor,  has argued that we are wired to nurture others and care for their needs. These are the hidden needs that ennoble the human spirit, but they also take effort and time to process because they are complicated and complex drivers of our behavior. Too often we settle for a fleeting emotion such as happiness because it’s both instant and a popular meme. But, at the end of the day, our deepest need is to make a contribution to society that is meaningful to us.How to make It work for you:  You can move toward a deeper and enduring sense of what motivates you if you are self-aware. Ask yourself, “What do I really want?” Another great question to ask yourself at the end of each day is this: “Was I better today than yesterday?” Again, ask trusted colleagues or friends for feedback, but make sure it is honest and constructive.3. Create a mindset that winsIf you think of yourself as flexible and resilient, you will do much better in both business and life. Your image of who you are influences how you behave and thus becomes a self-fulfilling prophecy.Carol Dweck’s research at Stanford University  has determined that if we view a trait as mutable, we are inclined to work on it more. On the other hand, if we view a trait such as IQ or willpower as unchangeable, we’ll make little effort to improve it.Dweck is well-known for her work on “fixed vs. growth mindset.” People with a fixe d mindset believe their basic abilities, intelligence and talents are fixed traits. They have a certain amount of talent and nothing will change it. People with a growth mindset, however, believe that their talents and abilities can be developed through effort and persistence. If you create a growth mindset, you have the mental toughness to learn from criticism rather than ignore it; to overcome challenges rather than avoid them; and find inspiration in the success of others rather than feel threatened.Self-aware people can create a growth mindset that’s focused on personal growth because they believe they can improve and develop their skills. How to make It work for you:  The best way to change the type of person that you believe you are is through small, repeated actions. Focus on the process, not the outcome. Don’t worry about how to write a best-seller; instead, commit to publishing your ideas on a consistent basis. It’s not about the result. It’s about how to create a min dset that enjoys the results.4. Prevent self-deceptionAccording to psychologists, our tendency for self-deception stems from our desire to impress others. We convince ourselves of our capabilities in the process.Human beings are masters of self-deception. We lie to ourselves about why we like to wear designer clothes, drive fast cars and climb the corporate ladder. Most of the time, we’re completely unaware of the deception going on in our minds.Companies lose serious money every year due to their employee’s lack of self-awareness. Inaccurate self-assessment leads to sales targets that can’t be met, deadlines that can’t be carried out and performances that are promised but not delivered.Interestingly, most of us have no trouble seeing through the delusions of our colleagues! We recognize the bumbling idiot who postures for a promotion or the incompetent supervisor who mumbles in meetings. If we are self-aware and see ourselves with greater clarity, we are more likely to land on our feet when confronted with the unexpectedHow to make It work for you: Honesty is the best tool to combat self-deception. It means we will need to look in the mirror and take responsibility for who we are. Honesty requires a deliberate effort on a daily basis. We must learn to observe our emotions, thoughts and behavior without judgment or evaluation. If we are self-aware, it is easier for us to focus our mind, concentrate and direct our attention toward activities that will give us the opportunity to change. This article originally appeared on LaRae Quy.You might also enjoy… New neuroscience reveals 4 rituals that will make you happy Strangers know your social class in the first seven words you say, study finds 10 lessons from Benjamin Franklin’s daily schedule that will double your productivity The worst mistakes you can make in an interview, according to 12 CEOs 10 habits of mentally strong people

How to Create a Personal Vision Statement for Your Life

How to Create a Personal Vision Statement for Your Life How to Create a Personal Vision Statement for Your Life Your personal vision statement guides your life and provides the direction necessary to chart the course of your days and the choices you make about your career. Think of your personal vision statement as the light shining in the darkness that illuminates your life path. Write a vision statement as the first step in focusing your life. It can help put things into perspective- your joy, your accomplishments, your contribution to the world, your glory, and your legacy. Prepare to Draft Your Vision Statement The preparation for drafting your own vision statement involves lots of thought, introspection, and reflection. It can take time to formulate all your thoughts cohesively. To get started, ask yourself some guiding questions. Be honest. Your answers can help you clearly illustrate your vision. Questions to Ask Yourself What are 10 things that you most enjoy doing? These are the 10 things without which your weeks, months, and years would feel incomplete. What three things must you do every single day to feel fulfilled in your work? What are your five to six  most important values?Write one important goal for each of the following facets of your life: physical, spiritual, work or career, family, social relationships, financial security, mental improvement and attention, and fun.If you never had to work another day in your life, how would you spend your time instead of working? When your life is ending, what will you regret not doing, seeing, or achieving? What strengths have other people commented on about you and your accomplishments? What strengths do you see in yourself? What weaknesses have other people commented on about you and what do you believe are your weaknesses? You can explore additional thoughtful questions  that may also  provide the opportunity for introspection. Develop Your Vision Statement Once you have thoughtfully prepared answers to these questions and others that you have identified as significant, you are ready to craft a personal vision statement. Write in the  first person and make statements about the future you hope to achieve. Write the statements as if you are already making them happen in your life. Some experts recommend 50 words or less, but forget word counts and fully articulate the vision that you want for your life and your future. The more detailed you make your image, the better you can see it in your minds eye. According to motivational speaker and writer Brian Tracy, you generally accomplish your written goals, dreams, plans, and visions. Writing down written goals lends power and commitment to their accomplishment.   Keep in mind that your personal vision statement can also change over time, depending on what is happening in your life. You might be amazed at how many components remain consistent over time.   When people live and experience the components of their personal vision frequently, they can feel inner peace and joy that knows no bounds. Your personal vision statement can have the same impact on you. Envision Your Ideal Life Theresa Quadrozzi, a certified life coach, suggests that you should think about how you would want your life to be- no holds barred.   One of the first exercises I do with clients is to have them envision their ideal  life,  as if money was no  option, as if a fairy godmother granted their every wish and they woke up in the morning to find that theyve all come true. This helps shift them out of a fear-based, conditioned world, out of pessimism and into  possibilities, into what could be. Quadrozzi claims that people fail to live fulfilling lives because they are pulled down by the negative factors they see around them, like economic downturns and uncertainty in their work life. Meanwhile, in reality, there are endless possibilities up for grabs with the world constantly innovating and creating new opportunities. As Quadrozzi suggests, What would you like to do? What does the world need? What difference are you going to make? Use your talents. Make your own reality. You can live all your days as if they are the fulfillment of your hopes and dreams- because you use every day to accomplish some of them. Recognize the significance of this commitment to you and your life. To quote the late American televangelist and motivational speaker  Robert H. Schuller, What would you do if you knew you couldnt fail? Repeat, what would you do if you knew you couldnt fail? One more time, what would you do if you knew you couldnt fail?

Sharpen Your Presentation Skills as a Consultant

Sharpen Your Presentation Skills as a Consultant Sharpen Your Presentation Skills as a Consultant To pitch a potential client or give a progress report on a project, every successful consultant needs good presentation skills. If youre ever nervous when youre telling a group of people about your work, so is almost everyone else. Here are some guidelines for easing your natural anxiety and delivering your message effectively when facing any audience. What to Present Whether youre talking to one person or more than one, youre just communicating, says communications consultant Bill Smartt, president of SmarttTalk in New York City. Start by figuring out the message you want someone to take away. That might be the specific problem youre going to solve. Then present three other points that support your main theme. Simply delivering a bunch of facts is boring, says Smartt. Instead, tell a story. Have a conversation with your audience. Talk to them, instead of staring into space. Use stories that show your personal perspective on what youre discussing, and tie into your topic. Thats what people remember. To pitch new business, ask yourself whats most important to this client. Consultants usually know all the specifics, but the client doesnt need to know every detail. A business cares about how much your work will cost, whether it will solve the problem, and be completed on time, Smartt advises. Let that drive your presentation! Try to anticipate likely questions. Invite colleagues to suggest possibilities, and rehearse answers to all of them. You may be surprised occasionally, but youll usually be ready with well-informed, confident replies. For your final presentation after a project, consider what your client actually cares about. Its not just that you did a good job, but that you did it efficiently, Smartt notes. Although consulting relationships dont always go smoothly, emphasize the positive. For instance, you could say, We had some challenges and weve learned a lot by resolving them. How to Prepare The secret of a good presentation is invisible. Its rehearsal. People devote 90% of their preparation time to content. Yet studies show that only 10% of audience response is based on a presentations content. Theyre more affected by your facial expressions, gestures, posture and movements, as well as by the tone, pitch and volume of your voice, explains Smartt. Spend at least 40% of preparation time on your feet, rehearsing out loud. Youll feel ridiculous, but its crucial. Whenever someone speaks in front of a group and it looks effortless, that means they invested lots of time practicing, Smartt says. Steve Jobs would spend months working on a presentation, over and over, until it looked casual and natural. You become more confident when you go through your talk many times. Find a rehearsal space larger than your cubicle or office. If possible, use the room where youll actually make your presentation, to become familiar with its features and setting. The more you can rehearse all the actual circumstances, the better. Round up some friends or colleagues to be your audience for a few minutes, but ask them not to make suggestions. Even with the best intentions, you can get awful feedback in all kinds of ways that may not be helpful, Smartt cautions. Because so much happens internally when you face a group, its important to become aware of your physiological responses. How are you breathing? Where do you feel tension? Are you making eye contact with several people in your audience? Videotape yourself. You cant tell how long your presentation is until you tape it. Keep it brief, Smartt stresses. Aim for 15 minutes. Pay attention to whether youre loud enough, or speaking in a monotone. Do you use filler words? Do you lean to one side, or pace? Can you get a wireless router to test your Power Point, if you plan to use one? Then you can avoid leaning over your laptop to advance your slides, Smartt suggests. If interpersonal communication isnt your strength, Smartt observes, You still have to develop it to build your career. Try to speak at conferences to get the word out about what you do. Join Toastmasters, an excellent way to improve your presentation skills. You cant beat a weekly or bi-weekly check-in with others watching you, says Smartt. Take an Improvisation class. Youre in front of a group, and you have to think on your feet. Thats great practice for forming words and sentences, especially if your typical responses are more analytical. For any presentation, focus on the two critical factors. Rehearse. Remember that youre conversing with your audience, not delivering a monologue. Dont be just another bad speaker, urges Smartt. If you practice and plan ahead, youll stand out as being a good presenter. Carol Milano is an independent writer. Don̢۪t be just another bad speaker. If you practice and plan ahead, you̢۪ll stand out as being a good presenter.Bill Smartt, president, SmarttTalk

How to Start Your First Job Search

How to Start Your First Job Search How to Start Your First Job Search Whether youre a teen or older and looking for your first job, youll need to prepare for a job search. Before you start looking for your first job, you will need to gather some information together including details and dates of your educational background, as well as your skills, and any volunteer or informal work experience you have. Tips for Finding Your First Job Even if you havent had a real job that pays you a paycheck, volunteering, babysitting, delivering papers, and similar types of experience count as work when youre writing a resume or completing a job application. Check the Rules: Depending on your age, there may be requirements about what jobs you can, and cannot do. For example, if youre 14 or 15 you can only work 3 hours per  day and a maximum of 18 hours per week. Depending on where you live, you may need Working Papers (Employment/Age Certificate) before you can start a job.Check First Job Options: Your first job should be a fun job! Consider what you would like to do and where you would like to do it. Does the beach sound better than the mall? Or would you be thrilled to get the employee discount that comes with some retail jobs? Heres a list of first job options to review. Also, review this list of companies that hire high school students. Make a List: Make a list of where you went to school, dates of attendance, and if you have participated in sports or other after-school activities, list them too. List any work you have done, organizations you belong to (like the Girl Scouts or 4H) and any volunteer organizations you have helped. You need the information to complete job applications and to write a resume.Job Applications: This guide to job applications explains how to complete a job application, reviews paper employment applications, online and employer direct applications and includes a job application sample to download, so you will know what you need to know when applying. Writing Your First Resume: Here are resume writing tips and suggestions on how to write a resume for the first time. These suggestions on what to include and how to write your resume are relevant for someone who wants to polish up their existing resume too!How to Apply for a First Job: If you are applying in-person for your first job, heres what to wear, what to bring, and the details that you need to know before you start applying.Getting Your First Part-Time Job: Finding your first part-time job can seem like a difficult task. The most important steps in going to get that first job take place before you even head out the front door. Heres how to prepare for a first job search, along with tips and strategies for job seekers looking for a part-time job. Starting a Job Search: Start your job search by visiting the sites that focus on hourly and entry-level jobs. Here is a selection of job sites for first-time job seekers plus tips for searching them and for information on where else to look for jobs. If youre a student, check with your Guidance Office or Career Services Office to see how they can help you with a job search.Tips for Getting Hired: Keep in mind that you may not get the first job you apply for, or the second... A job search can take time, especially if you dont have much experience. Heres how to ensure youre a top-notch candidate for the jobs you are applying for. Be Persistent: Wait a few days, then follow-up your application with a phone call to the hiring manager reiterating your interest. If you have applied in person, stop in again and mention that you are really interested in the opportunity.Dont Stop: Dont apply at one place and wait for the phone to ring. Complete as many job applications as you can, and consider a variety of positions. The more you apply, the better chance you have of finding a job.Be Flexible: Applicants who are only available for limited hours are less likely to get hired than those who are flexible as to when they can work. For example, one candidate for a summer job told the employer that they were only available on Wednesday afternoons and Saturday mornings. Compare that to another applicant who selected any on the Hours Available section of the job applicant and you can see why the second applicant got the job. Use Your Connections: If you have a connection, use it. Does your mom shop regularly at the store where youd like to work? If so, have her mention that youre looking for a job. Thats how I got my first job and how my brother got his first job at the drug store across the street.Dress Appropriately: When applying for jobs, dress as though you had the job. If youre applying for a retail position, for example, visit the store before you apply to see what the staff is wearing. It will give you an idea as to how you should dress. When in doubt, dress up, not down. Dont Give Up: Job searching isnt easy, especially when you dont have much experience or many skills. Keep trying and keep applying and you will find a job. Your first job will be a stepping stone to your next job - and to your future career. Before you get started, also review this list of things that you shouldnt do when youre applying for a job to up your chances of getting a job offer.
